Abstract

Semantics is one of the most important scientific tools for uncovering and explaining the hidden layers of meaning, particularly in revealed texts. By providing a systematic framework, this discipline enables textual analysis and the examination of semantic relations among lexical items. Using a descriptive-analytical method and a semantic approach, the present study examines the meanings of lexical items belonging to the semantic field of Sūq (driving, herding, or impelling) and their significations in the Holy Qur’an. The study aims to identify the literal and figurative significations of these lexical items, as well as their semantic connotations, which play a key role in determining the meaning of each word. The findings indicate that, depending on the context and contextual clues, these lexical items can be classified into three groups. The first consists of the term Sūq, which is used both in a material sense, with a literal signification, and in a spiritual sense, with a figurative signification. The second comprises terms such as "Ṭard, Nafy, Izjāʾ, Jalāʾ, Nahr, Daʿʿ, Dahr, Rajm, and Istifzāz," which denote material meanings with literal significations. The third includes terms such as "Ḥashr, Khasaʾ, Laʿn, Qatl, Buʿd, and Suḥq," which are used in spiritual meanings with figurative significations. Furthermore, material meanings account for the highest frequency of occurrence, while disbelief and ingratitude are identified as the most important causes of human beings’ exclusion from divine mercy. These lexical items also exhibit a variety of semantic connotations, including positive, negative, neutral, derogatory, and threatening meanings.
