An Analysis of Western Quranic Scholars’ Interpretive Approaches to the Mysterious Letters in the Opening Verses of the Qur’an

Abstract

The mysterious disjointed letters (ḥurūf muqaṭṭaʿāt) that appear at the beginning of certain chapters of the Holy Qur’an have long been among the enigmatic subjects of Qur’anic studies. Although these letters vary in form and occurrence, they have given rise to numerous interpretations and speculations throughout history. This study, employing a descriptive–analytical method, aims to explain and critically examine the interpretive approaches of Western Qur’anic scholars and Orientalists toward this phenomenon. The central research question concerns what views have been proposed by Western scholars—such as Nöldeke, Blachère, Montgomery Watt, Goldziher, --- regarding the ḥurūf muqaṭṭaʿāt, and to what extent their interpretations rest upon sound scientific and logical foundations. The study reviews various explanations put forward by these scholars, including attempts to relate the letters to the abjad numerical system, to the thematic content of the respective chapters, to the names of certain Companions, or to categorize them as ambiguous and esoteric verses. The analysis ultimately shows that most Western interpretations lack solid scholarly and logical bases, being largely speculative and influenced by specific presuppositions that diverge from established principles of Islamic exegesis.

حروف مقطعه قرآن کریم، همواره از موضوعات اسرارآمیز و مورد بحث در مطالعات قرآنی بوده‌اند. این حروف، با وجود تنوع در ظاهر، تفاسیر و گمانه‌زنی‌های بسیاری را در طول تاریخ به خود دیده‌اند. این پژوهش به شیوه توصیفی تحلیلی و با هدف تبیین و تحلیل رویکردهای تفسیری قرآن‌پژوهان و مستشرقان غربی پیرامون این پدیده، انجام شده است. سؤال اصلی پژوهش این است که دیدگاه‌های مطرح شده توسط قرآن‌پژوهان غربی (مانند: نولدکه، بلاشر، مونتگمری، گلدزیهر) در خصوص حروف مقطعه چیست و تا چه اندازه این تفاسیر، بر مبنای علمی و منطقی استوار هستند؟ در این پژوهش ضمن معرفی تفاسیر ارائه شده از سوی این پژوهشگران، که غالباً شامل ارتباط دادن حروف مقطعه به نظام ابجد، اشاره به محتوای سوره، ادعای ارتباط با نام برخی صحابه، یا در نظر گرفتن آن‌ها به عنوان آیاتی متشابه و رازآلود است، به ارزیابی مبانی فکری و اعتبار علمی آن‌ها پرداخته می‌شود. نتایج پژوهش نشان می‌دهد که تفاسیر غربی ارائه شده، اغلب فاقد بنیان‌های قوی علمی و منطقی لازم بوده و بیشتر بر اساس حدس و گمان، یا پیش‌فرض‌های خاص تفسیری بنا شده‌اند که با اصول تفسیری اسلامی فاصله دارند.
